Fortunate Families Detroit affirms that all the baptized, in the diversity of our sexual orientation, are called to full participation in the life, worship, and mission of the church.

We foster inclusivity, mutual understanding and appreciation of all persons by promoting hospitality, education, and support.

“Many Native Americans believed in the concept of ‘two-spirited’ people who did not fit typical gender roles in society — and thought families were very ‘fortunate’ to have such members. We can learn from tribal cultures that appreciate each individual for their unique talents and character.”

—Mary Ellen Lopata, co-founder of the Fortunate Families national organization

We are families, parents, and allies who affirm and celebrate our family members and friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. We are “fortunate” because our LGBT children and friends are a gift to us and to our community.  We are open to all who are striving to continue to embrace their Catholic faith as well as to love and celebrate their LGBT family members and friends.

Fortunate Families, along with Christ the King Catholic Church had a wonderful weekend again this year at Motor City Pride. We had an opportunity to speak with, and welcome  many other Catholics who thought they couldn't continue to celebrate their Catholic faith!

Fortunate Families serves as a resource and networking ministry with Catholic parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children. We promote and facilitate personal, meaningful, and respectful conversation, especially within our parishes and with our pastors and bishops. We stress the significance of our personal stories as a source of grace within our families and as a witness for justice in our civic and faith communities.

We hold fast to the truth that our children are, in the words of the United States bishops, “child[ren] of God, gifted and called for a purpose in God’s design.” (Always our Children 1997-1998)
